We’re on a mission to create two groundbreaking interactive learning centers that celebrate San Antonio’s legendary past and visionary future in aerospace and military service. These centers will illuminate the incredible stories of the Airmen, Guardians, and aerospace innovators who keep our aircraft soaring and our spirits flying high.

Two wings, one vision: ​​The Journey of Flight project soars across San Antonio, with two wings stretching from Lackland AFB to Port San Antonio. One wing, firmly rooted in the training grounds of Lackland, will serve as a vibrant hub for Airmen, Guardians, and their families—a place to gather, learn, and celebrate their vital roles within the Air Force family. But it’s not just for them; this wing will also open its doors to the public, offering immersive educational experiences that showcase the diverse roles of our Airmen and Guardians while inspiring future generations to take flight in service to our country.

The other wing of our project will take flight at Port San Antonio, becoming a state-of-the-art, aviation-based STEM learning center. Located near leading aerospace companies, visionary aviation and space entrepreneurs, an aviation tech charter school, the Boeing Center, and the future “vertiport” air transportation hub, this center will be a beacon of inspiration for all ages. It will ignite imaginations and cultivate the next generation of aerospace innovators, propelling the industry—and dreams—into the future.

Both centers will be interactive and educational, celebrating the remarkable individuals who have made history in San Antonio and across the globe.

Jack C. Hebdon, Jr.
Chairman of the Board

Jack C. Hebdon, Jr. is a Partner, EVP, and CFO of Bakke Development Corporation. Hebdon received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin with majors in Accounting and Finance. He went on to graduate with honors from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. He is a CPA licensed in the State of Texas (CPA license retired in 2020), and a member of the AICPA and Texas Society of CPAs.. He has an extensive background in business and real estate development, having developed over 5 million square feet of commercial development, including office, hotel, multi-family, self-storage, and retail centers. He is an Emirates Member of the Air and Space Force National Civic Leaders, a group of advisors to the Secretary of the Air Force, Chief of the Air Force, and Chief of Space Operations. In February 2024, he was awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest award given by the Department of the Air Force to a civilian, for his support over the years. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Journey of Flight.

Timmothy Dickens
Vice Chairman

Timmothy M. Dickens, CMSgt, USAF (Ret), serves as Vice Chairman of the Journey of Flight Board of Directors. He completed a 32-year career in the USAF including duties in Material Facilities, Inventory and Supply Systems management; as a Military Training Instructor; and as a Ceremonial Guardsman. Dickens served as Command Chief Master Sergeant at the Wing, Numbered Air Force and Defense Agency levels, as well as in the deployed environment. He currently leads the DICKENS Consulting Group, a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, as President and CEO, whose primary focus is “Capacity Building” through executive coaching, resiliency skills enhancement and organizational/workforce training, education and development. Dickens joined the Airmen Heritage Foundation Board in 2012 and served as Vice President prior to being elected President in 2015.

Ed Garland
Treasurer

Ed brings to Journey of Flight 40+ years of Air Force, private contractor and non-profit experience. His Air Force career included flying, command and leadership positions in both his active duty and reserve assignments. As a licensed professional engineer, he served in several key engineering management positions both as a civilian employee of the Air Force and for several private contractors. Ed has been involved with Journey of Flight for 7 years serving as a board member and as past Chairman of the Board.

Al Flowers
Board Member

Alfred K. Flowers, Maj Gen, USAF (Ret), is a member of Journey of Flight Board of Directors. General Flowers began his USAF career as an enlisted supply warehouseman in 1965, then a transportation specialist and then an accounting specialist. He was selected for promotion to MSgt and then commissioned following graduation from Officer Training School as a distinguished graduate in 1978. He served as a budget officer at the squadron, major command and Air Staff levels. He joined Air Combat Command as Budget Operations Division Chief and later, Chief of Budget. He served on the Joint Staff as a Defense Resource Manager; as Air Force Director of Budget Programs; as a Director for US Special Operations Command Center for Force Structure, Requirements, Resources and Strategic Assessments; Commander, Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools; Commander, 2nd Air Force; and as Air Force Budget Director. He retired in 2012 and was the longest serving active duty airman in the history of the USAF, the longest serving African American in the history of Defense and at the time of his retirement, the longest serving in all of Defense. He is a Board member of the Air Force Aid Society and Lackland Fisher Houses. General Flowers joined the Airmen Heritage Foundation Board of Directors in 2012.

Alfred A. Herring, CMSgt, USAF (Ret.)
Board Member

Alfred A. Herring, CMSgt, USAF (Ret), is a Journey of Flight member of the Board of Directors.  He completed a 30 year USAF career with duties in Inventory, Supply and Material Management; as a Career Development Course writer; the Logistics Wholesale Career Broadening Program; as End Item Manager for the F16 fighter aircraft; and served as Group Superintendent at the Air Force most northern installation, Thule AB, Greenland.   Additionally, Herring served as a Command Chief Master Sergeant at the Wing, Air Expeditionary Task Force and Numbered Air Force levels. He currently is President /CEO of Redfish Incorporated, a startup real estate investment company where he oversees several lease properties and a tree and agriculture farm in his home state of North Carolina.  He is President of the Airmen Heritage Foundation Board of Directors.

Bianca Rhodes
Board Member

Bianca Rhodes graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance in 1981. Rhodes’ career started in banking which led to positions with two companies as their Chief Financial Officer: Intelogic Trace, (NYSE:IT) and Kinetic Concepts Inc. (NASDAQ: KNCI). After KCI’s successful private sale, Rhodes founded CrossRhodes Consulting, specializing in raising capital and structuring buyouts for dozens of companies. Since 2017, Rhodes has served as the President and CEO of Knight Aerospace which specializes in roll-on, roll-off medical and VIP modules and various palletized systems sold to over thirty-four countries throughout the world. Her career includes numerous voluntary positions including the founding of Any Woman Can, and Board positions with AirLife San Antonio, Junior Achievement of South Texas, Big Brothers and Sisters, Baptist Healthcare Systems, San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind, the Dee Howard Foundation, and the SA Chamber of Commerce. Rhodes also serves on the Board of Directors of Dura Software, Inc., Lawson Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: LAWS), and Intuity Medical. In 2021, Rhodes was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame and named the San Antonio Business Journal Woman of the Year.

Brian Hoffman
Board Member

Brian E. Hoffman is the Vice Director for the 502d Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. He advises the commander on civilian personnel actions and assists the commander in managing and overseeing major projects, facilities, and infrastructure for 20-wing equivalent organizations. Hoffman is a prior active duty finance officer and commissioned from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2007. He served in multiple positions at the base level including interim commander of the 45th Comptroller Squadron at Patrick AFB, Florida. He also served in a variety of centers including the Air Force Financial Management Center of Expertise and Deputy of Budget Operations for the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center. While on active duty, he deployed once to Kabul, Afghanistan and once to a joint position with headquarters, International Security Assistance Force, Afghanistan. Hoffman also worked on the Enterprise Stress Test team at the United Services Automobile Association before returning to the Air Force as a civil servant. He continues to serve in the United States Air Force Reserve.

Rod Roberts
Volunteer Corps Leader

Rod Roberts is a lifelong San Antonian. He graduated from Highlands High School and joined the Army in 1975. After his enlistment, Roberts attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served several Army tours around the United States and overseas in Germany and Turkey. After Roberts separated from the Army, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio. In  2019, Roberts founded San Antonio Flight, an organization focused on preserving and promoting San Antonio’s role in aviation history. He serves on the board of Journey of Flight and leads the Graduation Guides supporting the Air Forces’ weekly Basic Training graduation. He also volunteers with the Texas Air Museum at Stinson Field and is a Certified Professional Tour Guide.

Ellen Martin
Executive Committee Member

Ellen is a retired Vice President of ethics and business conduct at The Boeing Company. She most recently led the executive team responsible for managing Boeing’s global ethics and compliance program; including management of ethics inquiries and cases, investigations, initiatives to advance an open and accountable culture as well as compliance risk management.

Ellen has 30 years of experience at Boeing. In addition to her leadership experience in ethics and compliance she held leadership positions in manufacturing, quality assurance, human resources, product support, merger and acquisition integration and program management. She holds the Leadership Professional in Ethics and Compliance (LPEC) certification with ECI. She has a bachelor of science degree from the State University of New York College at Buffalo and a masters in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.

Ellen serves on the board of  two non-profit organizations in San Antonio; Journey of Flight and Masters Leadership Program San Antonio. She supports the Audit and Compliance Risk Management Committee for The Chicago Lighthouse and is a Senior Advisor for the Ethics and Compliance Initiative.

Brad Webb
Board Member

Lt. Gen. Brad Webb retired in May 2022 as the Commander, Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Joint Base San Antonio–Randolph, Texas. He was responsible for the recruitment, training and education of Air Force personnel. His command included Air Force Recruiting Service, two numbered Air Forces and Air University. The command operated more than 1,400 trainer, fighter and mobility aircraft, 24 wings, 11 bases and five geographically separated groups, training more than 293,000 students per year with approximately 60,000 active duty, Reserve, Guard, civilian and contractor personnel.

Lt. Gen. Webb graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1984. A career special operator and helicopter pilot, he accumulated more than 3,700 flying hours, including 117 combat hours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia. Prior to AETC, the general commanded seven other times including Air Force Special Operations Command, Special Operations Command Europe and NATO Special Operations Headquarters.

Valerie Moczygemba
Board Member

Valerie Moczygemba is the daughter of Lt Col George Varoff, Ret. and Eve Varoff. She has lived in the San Antonio area since 1957, when her father retired. She is a member of “Tex” Hill Wing, Commemorative Air Force and Alamo Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, where she holds the grade of Captain, Civil Air Patrol. She also volunteers with Dream Flights, where she teaches aircraft marshaling and ground crew/ramp safety.

Doug King
Executive Director

Doug King heads an organization seeking to tell the amazing hundred-year story of flight in San Antonio, to honor the Airmen and Guardians who have been the heart of that great story, and to inspire and engage the students who will write its next chapters. King was previously President and CEO of the Museum of Flight in Seattle from 2010 to 2017, leading a team of more than 500 dedicated staff members, docents, and volunteers that sought to be the “foremost educational air and space museum in the world.” King joined the Museum of Flight after fifteen years as President of the Saint Louis Science Center, the fourth largest in the country, and one of the nation’s 25 largest museums. While there he built a team that was rewarded with the Association of Science-Technology Center’s highest honor—the Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Award—three times. Prior to his work at the Saint Louis Science Center, King served for five years as president of Challenger Center for Space Science Education headquartered in Washington, DC. He was appointed by the Administrator of NASA to Chair the Agency’s Education and Public Outreach Committee and by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force to the Air Force Civic Leaders Group, where he earned the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, its highest civilian honor.  He has also served as president of the Association of Science Museum Directors, and as a member of the NASA Advisory Council, the Congressional Web-based Education Commission, the Board of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, and the Accreditation Review Board of the American Alliance of Museums.

Barbara Stevens
Executive Assistant

Barbara Stevens currently serves as the Executive Assistant to Doug King, the Executive Director of Journey of Flight. Before this non-profit organization, she worked as Office Mgr., for P16 Plus (DBA Up Partnership); Dir. of Special Events for the Briscoe Western Art Museum; and Community Relations and Promotions Director for The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo where she created the fundraiser Cowgirls Live Forever and resurrected the downtown Longhorn Cattle Drive. Barbara received her Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio in Health and Physical Education and is a graduate of Leadership San Antonio, Leadership Hampton Roads and the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio.

Yelena Kanevsky-Buck
Legal Counsel

Yelena Kanevsky-Buck graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, with a Jurist Doctor degree and is a licensed attorney in Texas. Yelena is the Deputy General Counsel for Family Endeavors, Inc., a San Antonio nonprofit corporation. In addition, Yelena is the Corporate Secretary for Endeavors Health, a San Antonio nonprofit corporation that supports the veteran community. Before joining Family Endeavors, Inc., Yelena was a Contracting Officer for the Air Force at the Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio and the JBSA-Lackland Kelly Field Annex in Texas.
